Over the last few decades, vehicle theft has constantly reduced. However, the market for stolen commercial vehicles such as vans and the valuable equipment and tools carried inside them, is still growing.
According to the NsVCIS or national vehicle crime intelligence, in 2015 the most stolen vehicle in the United Kingdom was Ford Transit. While the Mercedes sprinter was in the second number in this list.
Most of the vehicle that was stolen, never found or recovered because they were broken down into the smaller parts and then they were sold. A large firm can be affected due to the loss of vehicle but its impact on the smaller businesses is very crippling.
Some of the solutions for vehicle security include slam lock, dead lock and ghost immobiliser fitting.
In this article, we will try to help you out in order to keep one step ahead of vehicle thieves by using the various type of locks available on the market. It will also help you to learn how to protect your vehicles from these criminals and keep you safe from being a target of vehicle thieves.
1. Slam locks:
Slam lock works automatically and when you close the door of your vehicle it locks. On the other hand, Keys are needed for the deadlocks.
Slam lock links with the locking system of your vehicle which already existed whereas the deadlocks are entirely independent of the already existing locking mechanism. A slam lock is a locking system that instantly locks the vehicle door automatically on closing the door without any operation by the driver of the vehicle.
Basically, it was designed for uses like high-value loads and multi-drop delivery in which the control over the security of the goods is necessary and required by the owners or operators. Slam locks offers total control which is another main benefit of it.
The electronic locking system contains two types of unlocking either area (cab or load) or global (all doors). However, it makes the doors vulnerable that are not needed until auto-lock action is not activated.
However, shamrocks don’t have this type of vulnerability. These lock the doors of the van automatically when you close it. The main purpose of this locking system is to protect your vehicle, when you leave it for a short period of time such as to deliver an item.
These locks are available in two formats such as remote-controlled or key operated. You should choose the key-operated slam clock because it is safest. While remote-controlled slam locks can be cracked by the thieves with expert skills and knowledge and also digital lock picks are easily available. It makes digital lock picking easier even for an amateur criminal.
2. Deadlocks:
These types of locks are very hard to pick because of there is no spring mechanism inside these locks. If anyone wants to open or close the locks, he or she will need the key to open or close it.
They can’t force open this type of locks. In the deadlocks, a bold is pushed into the receiver which is fitted to other section of the body, usually the door of the van. It provides maximum security or safety but you have to unlock and lock it manually every time, when you leave your vehicle.
It is not very reliable, especially when you leave your vehicle for a short period of time on multiple stops.
Simpler to slam locks, the deadlocks are available in the radio operated version which uses the remote control of your vehicle or dedicated remote control. Again, it is not a very reliable method to protect your vehicle for thieves, However, it is a more convenient way at least.
