Wireless cameras and surveillance systems have been gaining lots of momentum. From a professional installers point of view I cringe every time someone asks my company, Marvelouz Teknology, to install a wireless security camera system. In my opinion the growing popularity is because it’s marketed As a DIY system with professional results. While the end result in most cases is great video and ease of use, you sacrifice the security feature in your security camera system.
Marvelouz Teknology specializes in security camera installation in Baltimore, MD. Baltimore being a very high crime rate, there are wireless cameras all over the place, even wireless cameras maintained by the city government. What a lot of people don’t realize is that wireless cameras can be jammed, and disabled by a very inexpensive RF or wireless jammer. This would render your security system highly ineffective.
What are wireless jammers and what are they used for?
Wireless jammers are used widely by the military as well as bomb squads. Imagine a wireless activated explosive that needed to be deactivated, a wireless jammer can prevent a remote detonation from a wireless transmitting device. All the same same a wireless jammer will prevent your security camera from uploading video while a jammer is near by.
Wireless cameras have wires!!
The better wireless cameras actually have wires. A lot of people don’t realize that wireless just means that the video signal is transmitted wirelessly but most higher end wireless cameras still have power wires attached to them. Which still requires wiring. On the residential side of things we’ve seen wireless cameras that are plugged into outside receptacles within arms reach of criminals who could just unplug the camera. Doesn’t sound to secure does it? The cheaper wireless cameras have batteries that have to be recharged every so often so that forces the camera to be mounted down low where a person could easily reach it to change or recharge a battery. If you can easily reach the security camera to change the battery so can the criminal trying to do harm.
So what to use?
If you’re truly looking for a Security Camera system use hardwired systems wired with coax or Ethernet style wiring, it’s more secure and less likely to be disabled.
